Choose a starting point
An AI developer roadmap is a sequence of capabilities, not a list of tools to collect. First choose one small task and a responsible user. Move to the next stage when you can demonstrate the output and explain its limits. This learning guide is available on this page; the downloadable checklist contains the same practice gates.
If you are new to programming, start with foundations. If you already build applications, check the first-stage gates and begin with model integration. If you operate an AI application, focus on evaluation and operations. Passing a checklist is not a job qualification or a guarantee of production readiness.
Write the smallest useful project briefStage 1: programming and data foundations
Choose one language for a small command-line or web application. Learn functions, data structures, files, HTTP requests, version control and automated tests. Practise reading an error and reducing it to a reproducible case before asking an assistant to repair it.
- Practice task: load a synthetic support FAQ from a file, search it by a keyword and print the matching source IDs.
- Evidence gate: a fresh checkout can run the app; tests cover an empty file, a missing field and a query with no match.
- Explain the boundary: identify what data you may use and what must never enter a learning exercise.
Stage 2: model integration and prompt contracts
Use one provider interface for one bounded task. Specify the allowed input, output fields and missing-information behaviour. Keep credentials on the server. Treat model output as untrusted data: check the structure before another component consumes it.
- Practice task: draft a support reply from one permitted FAQ passage, with the source ID and a review-required flag.
- Evidence gate: compare a baseline instruction with a small example-based prompt on the same held-out cases. Record invalid output, unsupported claims and response time.
- Explain the boundary: a generated draft has no permission to send a message or update a customer record.
Stage 3: retrieval and controlled workflows
Add retrieval only when the task needs information outside the immediate input. Keep a baseline keyword search so you can see whether a more complex approach helps. Check permissions before retrieving material, attach source references and distinguish a missing answer from a failed request.
- Practice task: expand the synthetic FAQ into several documents; include absent answers, conflicting passages and a restricted document.
- Evidence gate: measure whether relevant passages were retrieved separately from whether the answer used them correctly. Save the input, source version and reviewer decision.
- Explain the boundary: retries must not duplicate an action; consequential tool use needs an explicit approval step.
Stage 4: deployment, evaluation and operations
Ship the smallest reviewed pilot before adding more autonomy. Define request limits, failure behaviour, logs that avoid private data, an evaluation set and a rollback procedure. Record which model and source versions were actually tested.
- Practice task: deploy a read-only FAQ draft interface using synthetic inputs and a visible human review step.
- Evidence gate: demonstrate a provider timeout, an invalid response, a denied document and a rollback. Confirm that logs do not contain credentials or confidential inputs.
- Explain the boundary: a working demo does not establish reliability, compliance or safe operation for every user.
Turn the roadmap into your next study session
Choose one evidence gate you cannot yet demonstrate. Write an input, an expected outcome and one failure case. Work on that gap, keep the resulting code or review note and decide the next step from what happened. Adapt the pace to your prior experience and available time; this guide does not promise a fixed completion date.
Build a reusable AI task workbookDiscuss a focused project questionFrequently asked questions
Do I need to train a model before building an AI application?
This roadmap begins with programming and integrating an existing model. Training a model is a separate specialization; choose it only when your task and evidence justify that work.
How long does this AI developer roadmap take?
There is no fixed duration. Your prior programming experience, available time and project scope affect the pace. Use each evidence gate to identify the next learning task rather than treating a calendar as proof of competence.
Can I use the roadmap without signing up?
Yes. Read the complete guide here or download its plain-text checklist. No access request or account is required for this original learning guide.
What should I include in a portfolio project?
Include the problem, permitted data, working instructions, representative tests, observed failures and a review boundary. Explain your own decisions and label synthetic inputs and proposed work clearly.
