What Is a Vector Database? The Engine Behind AI Search

Traditional databases search by exact match. Vector databases search by meaning. This distinction makes them foundational to modern AI applications.

The Problem With Traditional Search

A SQL database can tell you: "Find all records where name = 'Ajay'." It can't tell you: "Find documents that are conceptually similar to this query."

Traditional search is lexical — it matches keywords. Vector search is semantic — it matches meaning. This matters enormously for AI applications.

What Is a Vector (Embedding)?

An embedding model (like OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002 or Cohere's embed models) converts text — a word, sentence, document — into a list of floating-point numbers. Typically 768 to 3072 numbers.

The remarkable property: semantically similar text produces numerically similar vectors. "Car" and "automobile" will have vectors very close to each other in this high-dimensional space. "Car" and "democracy" will be far apart.

Intuition: Imagine a 3D map of all concepts in language. Related concepts cluster together. A vector database is an index of this map that makes searching it extremely fast.

How Vector Search Works

  • Convert your documents into vectors and store them.
  • User submits a query — convert it to a vector too.
  • Find the stored vectors most similar to the query vector (using cosine similarity or dot product).
  • Return the corresponding documents.

This is called Approximate Nearest Neighbour (ANN) search — exact search would be too slow at scale, so vector DBs use clever indexing algorithms (HNSW, IVF) to approximate it very quickly.

Where Vector Databases Are Used

  • RAG systems: Store your document embeddings, retrieve relevant chunks at query time.
  • Semantic search: "Find similar products" without needing exact keyword matches.
  • Recommendation engines: "Users who liked X also liked Y" based on content similarity.
  • Duplicate detection: Find near-duplicate content at scale.
  • Agent memory: Store and retrieve episodic memory for long-running AI agents.

Choosing the Right One

For most projects starting out:

  • Prototyping: Chroma locally, or Pinecone free tier
  • Production, managed: Pinecone or Weaviate Cloud
  • Already on Postgres: pgvector extension — no new infra
  • Self-hosted at scale: Qdrant or Milvus
