The Spectrum of Human Involvement
| Pattern | Human Role | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Human-in-the-loop | Approves every AI action | High stakes, low trust, early deployment |
| Human-on-the-loop | Reviews outputs periodically | Medium stakes, established performance |
| Human-out-of-the-loop | Monitors metrics only | Low stakes, proven reliability |
When Human Review Is Non-Negotiable
- Any decision that significantly affects a person's life
- Customer-facing communications during early deployment
- Actions that are irreversible (emails, deletions, purchases)
- Legally or regulatorily sensitive decisions
Design Patterns
1. Approval Queue
AI generates output → human review queue → approve/edit/reject → action taken.
2. Confidence-Based Routing
High-confidence → automatic action. Low-confidence → human review. Requires calibration.
3. Exception Handling
AI handles routine cases. Defined exception categories route to humans.
4. Sample Review
AI acts automatically. Random 5–10% reviewed for quality monitoring.
