Why Most AI Projects Fail
A McKinsey survey found that fewer than 30% of AI projects deliver meaningful business value. The causes are almost never technical — they're strategic:
- Starting with technology, not a business problem
- No clear success metric defined upfront
- Data quality issues discovered too late
- No change management for the affected teams
- Expecting perfection from day one
The 6-Step Integration Framework
Step 1: Identify the Right Problem
Look for processes that are: repetitive, rule-based or pattern-based, high-volume, and currently bottlenecked by human capacity. Not every problem needs AI — pick ones where AI provides 10x improvement, not 10%.
Step 2: Define Success Metrics
Before building anything, define: What does success look like in 90 days? Possible metrics: time saved per task, cost per transaction, conversion rate, error rate reduction, customer satisfaction score.
Step 3: Audit Your Data
AI is only as good as its inputs. Audit: Do you have enough data? Is it labelled? Is it clean? Is it accessible? Data preparation is typically 60–80% of AI project effort.
Step 4: Start With a Pilot
Never try to automate everything at once. Pick one workflow, one team, one use case. Prove value in 8 weeks. Then expand. Pilots contain failure safely.
Step 5: Build Human-in-the-Loop
For your first deployments, always have humans review AI outputs before they affect customers or critical systems. Build trust gradually — both in the system and from your team.
Step 6: Measure, Learn, Scale
Track your pre-defined metrics weekly. Kill projects that aren't working at 4 weeks. Double down on what's working. Document learnings for your next AI initiative.
