The core idea
REST uses HTTP resources and methods, works naturally with caching, browsers and simple tools and is easy for third parties to adopt. GraphQL exposes a typed schema and lets clients request exactly the fields they need in one query, which helps when many different screens need different combinations of data. gRPC uses Protocol Buffers over HTTP/2 for efficient, strongly typed calls between services, with streaming support, and is less convenient to call directly from browsers. None is universally better; the right choice depends on clients, team skills and operational needs.
A practical approach
Step 1
List the clients: public third parties, your own web and mobile apps or internal services.
Step 2
Choose REST for public and partner APIs, simple CRUD and cases where HTTP caching matters.
Step 3
Consider GraphQL when several client applications need varied, nested data and you can invest in schema design, query cost limits and caching strategies.
Step 4
Consider gRPC for internal service-to-service calls where performance, typed contracts and streaming matter.
Step 5
Stay consistent within a boundary; mixing styles without a reason increases tooling and learning costs.
Worked example
A small learning platform plans to move its simple course and enrolment API to GraphQL because a blog recommended it. Listing the clients shows one web app and one partner integration, both served well by REST, and the team has no experience securing GraphQL query depth and cost. Keeping REST and adding a few purpose-built endpoints for the dashboard solves the over-fetching problem with far less change.
A mistake to avoid
Do not adopt GraphQL without planning for query complexity limits, authorisation per field and caching. An unrestricted schema lets clients write expensive queries and can expose data unintentionally.
Try it yourself
For an API you know, list every client, the data each needs and how often it changes. Write one paragraph recommending REST, GraphQL or gRPC and the main risk of your choice.
Your implementation checklist
- Clients and their data needs are listed
- Public and partner APIs default to REST
- GraphQL plans include cost limits and authorisation
- gRPC is considered for internal service calls
- Styles are consistent within a boundary
