Async AI Processing: Building Non-Blocking AI Workflows

Blocking your web server for a 30-second LLM call is a reliability disaster. Async AI processing with queues and workers is the production pattern you need.

On this page

The Async Architecture

  • Submit: Client POSTs task → API saves to queue → returns job ID immediately
  • Process: Worker dequeues job → calls LLM → processes result → stores in DB
  • Retrieve: Client polls GET /jobs/{id}, or receives webhook callback

Queue Options

Queue SystemBest For
BullMQ (Redis)Node.js, complex job scheduling
CeleryPython workers, task chaining
Cloudflare QueuesServerless edge processing
AWS SQSCloud-native, managed
InngestEvent-driven, great developer UX

Handling Long-Running Agents

Agents taking 5–30 minutes require: progress updates (stream to websocket or store in DB), checkpointing (save state so a crash doesn't restart from zero), and dead-letter queues (capture failed jobs for debugging).

Build Production AI Infrastructure

Our workshop covers async patterns, queue design, and production deployment for AI systems.
