The Nested Relationship
These three terms are not alternatives — they're nested categories:
AI ⊃ Machine Learning ⊃ Deep Learning Deep Learning is a subset of ML. ML is a subset of AI. All deep learning is ML, but not all ML is deep learning. And both are subsets of the broader field of AI.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Definition: Any technique that enables machines to mimic human intelligence — decision-making, perception, language understanding, planning.
AI is the umbrella. It includes:
- Rule-based systems (expert systems from the 1980s)
- Search algorithms (chess engines)
- Machine learning
- Robotics
- Natural language processing
An if-else decision tree that routes customer calls is AI. So is GPT-4. The term is broad by design.
Machine Learning (ML)
Definition: AI systems that learn from data rather than being explicitly programmed with rules.
In traditional programming: you write rules → feed in data → get output. In ML: you feed in data + desired output → the system learns the rules.
| ML Type | How It Learns | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised | Labelled examples | Spam detection, churn prediction |
| Unsupervised | Finds patterns without labels | Customer segmentation, anomaly detection |
| Reinforcement | Trial and error with rewards | Game-playing, robotics, ad bidding |
Deep Learning
Definition: ML using artificial neural networks with many layers (hence "deep") to learn hierarchical representations from raw data.
What makes it "deep": stacking many layers of neurons. Early layers detect simple patterns (edges in an image). Later layers detect complex patterns (faces, objects, meaning).
Deep learning became practical around 2012 when GPUs became affordable enough to train large networks. It powers:
- Image recognition (your phone's face unlock)
- Speech recognition (Siri, Alexa)
- Language models (ChatGPT, Claude)
- Recommendation engines (Netflix, YouTube)
When to Use Each
| Situation | Best Approach |
|---|---|
| Clear rules, small data | Traditional programming or rule-based AI |
| Structured data, predictable patterns | Classical ML (XGBoost, logistic regression) |
| Images, audio, text, video | Deep learning |
| Language generation, reasoning | LLMs (a type of deep learning) |
The Practical Takeaway for Business Leaders
You don't need to implement these yourself — but you do need to ask the right questions of your technical team:
- "Is this rule-based or does it actually learn from data?"
- "What data does it need to perform well?"
- "How does it behave when it sees data unlike its training set?"
- "Is this a pretrained model or are we training from scratch?"
