AI Governance: What It Is and Why Your Business Needs It

Companies deploying AI without governance frameworks are accumulating invisible risk — legal, reputational, and operational. Here's what good AI governance actually looks like in practice.

What Is AI Governance?

AI governance is the set of policies, processes, accountability structures, and technical controls that ensure AI systems are developed and deployed responsibly — aligned with organisational values, legal requirements, and stakeholder interests.

It's not bureaucracy. It's risk management.

Why It Matters Now

  • Legal exposure: India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) 2023 and emerging EU AI Act affect how you process data through AI systems.
  • Reputational risk: A single public AI failure (discriminatory output, data leak, factual error) can cause lasting brand damage.
  • Operational risk: Uncontrolled AI usage creates shadow IT, inconsistent outputs, and ungoverned data sharing with third-party APIs.
  • Vendor risk: Employees sharing confidential data with ChatGPT without policies is already happening in most organisations.

The Five Pillars of AI Governance

1. Policy & Acceptable Use

Define: which AI tools are approved, what data can be shared with them, what tasks are permitted, and what requires human review. Make it practical, not restrictive.

2. Data Governance

Classify your data (public, internal, confidential, restricted). Map which AI tools can access each class. Ensure contracts with AI vendors cover data residency and confidentiality.

3. Model Risk Management

For high-stakes AI decisions (credit, hiring, medical), require explainability, audit trails, and bias testing before deployment. Maintain model cards documenting training data, intended use, and limitations.

4. Human Oversight

Define which AI outputs require human review before action. Higher stakes = more oversight. Build escalation paths for edge cases the AI handles poorly.

5. Monitoring & Auditing

Log AI decisions and their outcomes. Review periodically for drift, bias, or degraded performance. Have a process for incident response when AI causes harm.

Starting Point for SMEs

You don't need a 50-page policy on day one. Start with:

  • A one-page approved AI tool list with data-sharing rules
  • A designated AI owner (could be CTO or a senior manager)
  • A simple review process for any new AI tool adoption
  • Quarterly review of AI systems in use
