AI Ethics for Builders: What You're Responsible For

Building AI without considering its ethical implications is how you create systems that harm people and destroy trust.

On this page

The Five Ethical Principles

1. Fairness

Test your system across demographic groups. If outcomes differ significantly by gender, age, or caste without justification, you have a bias problem.

2. Transparency

Be honest that AI is involved. At minimum, people affected should know AI is making or informing decisions.

3. Privacy

Do people know their data is being used? Is the use proportionate? Are you complying with DPDPA?

4. Accountability

When your AI causes harm, who is responsible? Build audit trails. Implement human oversight for high-stakes decisions.

5. Beneficence

Does your system make people's lives better, or primarily extract value while creating risk?

Ethics Checklist

  • Tested for demographic bias in outputs?
  • Users informed AI is involved?
  • Human escalation path for high-stakes decisions?
  • Training data sourced legally?
  • Incident response plan if AI causes harm?
