AI Document Processing: Extracting Value From Unstructured Data

Most business data is locked in PDFs and Word files. AI document processing unlocks it — extracting structured data, flagging issues, and routing automatically.

The Processing Pipeline

1. Ingestion

Documents arrive via email attachments, form uploads, API submission, folder monitoring.

2. OCR & Text Extraction

For scanned documents: OCR converts pixels to text. For digital PDFs: extract text directly. Tools: AWS Textract, Google Document AI, Tesseract.

3. Document Classification

LLM classifier identifies the document type (invoice, contract, application) and routes to the appropriate extraction template.

4. Data Extraction

Extract structured fields using LLM with specific prompts. For invoices: vendor, invoice number, date, line items, total, GST. Return as JSON.

5. Validation

Check extracted data against business rules. Flag anomalies for human review.

6. Integration

Push validated data into ERP or accounting system. Create workflow tickets for exceptions.

Accuracy Expectations

Clean digital PDFs: 90–98% field-level accuracy. Handwritten or low-quality scans: 70–85%. Always implement human review for exceptions and high-value documents.
